It is never easy to carry the hopes of a nation, let alone of a continent on your shoulders. That day, we all stood poised to see what you were going to do. Wall Street Journal called it a “pipe dream”. We gave them the side eye and anticipated the game. The first African team to reach the semi-finals? Everyone from metropolises to villages was surely watching.
You played well. You played beautifully. It was the most emotional, exciting, edge-of-your-seat match I’ve ever seen. I was shaking by the end. You gave Uruguay a run for their money through the 90 minutes, through the overtime and through the penalties. Though you did not win, you were a great contender. We’ll see you in 2014! Let those who call it a pipe dream eat their words. Thank you for what you did on that field. Thank you for playing with heart! Thank you for making me fall in love with football again.
